IAE vs Business Schools
If you wish to study Business or Management in France, you have a choice of a business school or an IAE (Instituts d’Administration des Entreprises / Institute of Business Administration).
French business schools are private institutions while IAEs are public institutions affiliated to universities. Both offer degrees in Business Administration and give an equal advantage on the average to graduates in terms of job prospects and starting salaries.
You may still wonder which option suits you better. Let us take a look at the main differences between the two systems:
- Tuition fees: The biggest difference may be the tuition fees. They are much lower (or even almost free!) in IAEs than in business schools where you may pay thousands of euros every year. For example, the tuition fee for a 2-year masters degree in prestigious Business Schools such as ESSEC is around 40,000€). In addition, such tuition fees may be expected to rise.
- Network: Currently, business schools generally have more a active alumni network because of the strong attachment to their alma mater and the Business Schools’ longer history. IAEs are comparatively still quite recent. However, IAEs are fast catching up and their alumni network is getting stronger every year.
- Student life: Business schools are well-known for the richness of their extracurricular activities. In business schools, a wide range of student associations catering to many interests are available to every student, , such as the Student Council, Junior-Enterprise, wine/gastronomy clubs, arts clubs, finance / marketing clubs, international clubs, model United Nations, sports clubs etc. Students are strongly encouraged to participate in these clubs and societies to enrich their academic life
Since IAEs are affiliated to universities, students can also benefit from the associated university system to join student associations / sport teams. However, there may be fewer options, especially if the university is located outside of big cities.
- Doing a PhD: If you are interested in research and furthering your studies after your masters degree, IAEs are a better option because they are public institutions and can take in Ph.D students. Only certain private schools, such as HEC or ESSEC, under the supervision of the Ministry of Economy and Finance, offer a doctoral programme leading to a recognised degree.
IAEs have a solid reputation for quality education and their degrees may be more recognised than that of many business schools. On the other hand, business schools generally have a stronger alumni network and a richer student life that you can benefit from. The costs are also a consideration.
To summarise, both options are equally good but all depends on your goals and means. Now that you have a better understanding of the two systems, we encourage you to do your own research and make your choice accordingly. All the best!
